Creating Believable Steampunk Worlds

Steampunk often takes the form of alternative history, a re-imagining of what has come before, rather than a creating a completely new universe. Alternative history is fun and allows a wide array of options in telling a story but many writers fall into the trap of waving a magic wand to shape real world circumstances into unrealistic, unbelievable utopian settings in which they place their stories.Presenting alternative history, whether for fiction, a game universe or just a basis for cosplay persona, should not be an exercise in forcing your audience into a long series of leaps of faith. A good writer, game world designer or even LARP character developer can and should use some of the tools we will present to create a believable alternative history that, while changing the course of historical events and developments, does not break believable human nature. Creative Professionals Raymond Witte and Brian Thomas believe you should leave a trail in your fiction of how you got to the future you are presenting. They will demonstrate techniques you can incorporate into your work to take your back story to the next level.
